International Licence Conversion

Moving to Australia with an overseas licence? We help international drivers prepare for the local driving test, understand Australian road rules and adapt to driving on the left-hand side of the road.

Navigate Australia's Licence Conversion Process with Expert Support

Australia welcomes hundreds of thousands of skilled migrants, international students and working holiday makers every year, and many of them arrive with a valid driving licence from their home country. While some can convert their licence through a simple administrative process, others are required to pass a practical driving test before they can legally drive on Australian roads. Requented connects international drivers with experienced instructors who specialise in licence conversion preparation, making the transition as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Converting your licence is not just about passing a test. It is about developing genuine competence and confidence in a driving environment that may be very different from what you are used to. Left-hand traffic, unfamiliar road signs, different give-way rules and the sheer vastness of Australian roads can all present challenges for experienced overseas drivers. Our instructors understand these challenges because they work with international drivers every day.

Which Countries Qualify for Simplified Conversion

Australia has reciprocal agreements with a number of countries that allow licence holders to convert their overseas licence without sitting a practical driving test. Generally, if you hold a full licence from a recognised country and have held it for the required period, you may be able to exchange it directly for an Australian licence at your state's transport authority.

Countries that typically qualify for simplified conversion include the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, most European Union nations, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Norway and several others. However, the specific list and requirements vary by state and territory. New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and other jurisdictions each maintain their own list of recognised countries and their own processing requirements.

If your country is not on the recognised list, or if you have held your licence for less than the required period, you will need to pass both a knowledge test covering Australian road rules and a practical driving test. This is where Requented's licence conversion lessons become invaluable.

What the Driving Test Involves

The practical driving test for licence conversion follows the same format as the standard test for locally trained drivers. You will be assessed by a government-appointed examiner over a drive that typically lasts twenty to thirty minutes. The examiner will evaluate your ability to perform a range of manoeuvres including turning at intersections, navigating roundabouts, changing lanes, merging, parking and responding to various traffic situations.

Critical errors that result in an immediate fail include disobeying traffic signals, failing to give way when required, mounting the kerb, causing a dangerous situation or requiring the examiner to intervene. Non-critical errors such as minor steering corrections, hesitation or imperfect mirror checks are recorded but do not automatically result in a fail unless they accumulate beyond the permitted threshold.

For experienced drivers, the test itself is not usually the difficult part. The challenge lies in adapting your existing driving habits to Australian standards and demonstrating them consistently under assessment conditions. Our instructors focus on exactly this: helping you translate your overseas experience into the specific behaviours that Australian examiners are looking for.

State-by-State Differences

One of the more confusing aspects of licence conversion in Australia is that each state and territory has its own rules. In New South Wales, you must convert your overseas licence within three months of becoming a permanent resident. In Victoria, the timeframe is six months. Queensland requires you to obtain a Queensland licence before your overseas licence expires or within three months of becoming a resident, whichever comes first.

The type of licence you receive can also vary. Some states issue a full licence immediately upon passing the test, while others may place conditions on your licence for an initial period. The fees, documentation requirements and testing centre locations also differ between jurisdictions. Our instructors are familiar with the specific requirements in their state and can guide you through the process, ensuring you have the right documentation and know what to expect at each stage.

Preparation Tips for International Drivers

If you are coming from a country that drives on the right-hand side of the road, the single most important adjustment is getting comfortable with left-hand traffic. This affects everything from which lane you drive in, to which direction you look first at intersections, to where you position your vehicle when turning. It takes most drivers several hours of supervised practice before the new orientation starts to feel natural, and our instructors will dedicate as much time as needed to this fundamental adjustment.

Australian roundabouts can also trip up overseas drivers. Unlike traffic circles in some countries, Australian roundabouts require you to give way to vehicles already on the roundabout, signal when entering and exiting, and choose the correct lane based on your intended exit. Multi-lane roundabouts, in particular, have specific lane-use rules that differ from international conventions.

Speed limits, school zones, construction zones and emergency vehicle rules all have specific Australian requirements that may differ from what you are used to. Our instructors cover all of these topics in your conversion lessons, along with practical tips for reading Australian road signs, understanding line markings and navigating the unique features of local roads such as hook turns in Melbourne or clearways in Sydney.

Flexible Lesson Packages

Most international drivers find that between two and five lessons are sufficient to feel confident and test-ready, depending on their prior experience and how different their home country's driving environment is from Australia's. We offer flexible booking with no lock-in contracts. You can start with a single assessment lesson and then decide how many additional sessions you need based on your instructor's recommendation and your own comfort level. Every lesson includes pick-up from your preferred location and takes place in a modern, dual-control vehicle that you can also use for the test itself.
